Karongwe 29.10.2011

Ca y est, nous sommes à Karongwe ! Nous avons été transferé le 20 octobre en 4x4 ouvert depuis la réserve de Selati jusqu'a la réserve de Karongwe, 40km, 2 heures ! C'est comme ça l'afrique du sud ! Tout le monde apprécie le confort du camp, nous avons de grandes tentes avec des lits !! Et non plus des matelas parterre ! Yes !
Changement de scène, ici il y a du gibier ! Et du gros ! Bien que nous n'ayons pas encore vu d'éléphants, (cela ne saurait trader), nous avons vu des guépards, léopards (2 dans la même journée, tu parles d'une veine !), lions en pleine action (et c'est pas de la chasse que je parle) rhinos blanc, tortue léopard, scorpion, chaméléons. Nickel !!
Nous avons fait une jour de "bird watching" ! Et avons vu 68 oiseaux différents, je vous épargne la liste, mais si vous la voulez, je me ferai une joie de vous la faire parvenir !
Côté température, cela monte, cela monte ! Nous avions environ 40 degrés cette semaine, et enfin il a plu ! De beaux orages pendant la nuit, on entend le tonnerre à des kilomètres à la ronde (ainsi que les babouins!), et le matin, il pleuvine quelques heures avant que le soleil ne remette de l'ordre dans tout ca ! et hop, la température reprends de l'altitude !!
Côté moral des troupes, tout va bien, nous avons eu les premières tensions, mais je suppose que c'est normal, des petits clans se forment, mais pour l'instant rien de bien méchant ! Une fois sorti de son petit confort l'humain devient un peu irritable ! Donc rien de tel qu'un jour off comme aujourd'hui pour détendre l'atmosphère !
Le temps passe vite ! déja 1 mois et demi que le cours a commencé ! dans 10 jours nous avons nos premières "vacances" ! C'est donc de Johannesburg que le prochain update sera fait !!

Here we go, we moved from Selati to Karongwe game reserve on 20th Octobre 2011, by mean of open land rover, 40 km, 2 hours, this is how it is in south africa ! We all enjoy the camp really much, it's more comfortable, the tents are huge ! And we even have beds ! Yes !
Change of scenary as well, even if we are still so close to Selati, there is much more game around here (commercial lodge !). Even if we didn't see any elephants yet, there are quite a few things .... Cheetas, white rhino, lions, leopard (yes ! and even two on the same day ... talking about getting lucky !!), leopard tortoise, chameleons, etc ....
We did a day of bird watching ! We got 68 different birds ... not bad ! And much more interesting than trees !!!!
Weatherwise, we had some peaks at around 40 degrees ...... and at least the rain came ... nice thunderstorms again, we could hear the thunder kilometers away, and then after the last drops in the early morning, the suns comes again and everthing is dry within minutes !
On the social side, we had the first tensions in the group, some smaller clans appeared, but nothing serious, and quite normal I suppose. Take people out of their comfort zone and they get a bit sensible I suppose. Today is a day off again, it will certainly do good to us, seeing something else for a day than the same faces !
Time flies, it's already been a month and a half since the training started ! In 10 days we have our first break ! It will from Johannesburg that I will update you next time !

Selati Game Reserve 3rd Week 8.10.2011

Cela fait deja 3 semaines que le cours de guide a commence, le temps passe, aujourd'hui est notre premier jour de conge ! Voici un petit recapitulatif de ces dernieres semaines !

Nous, les 16 participants au cours, nous sommes retrouve a Nelspruit le 15 septembre. Nous pensions relaxer deux jours .... que neni ! Arrive a 15h00, nous posons nos affaires dans les chambres, et hop, cela commence ! La paperasse a remplir, et le premier livre a lire, tout de suite ! Il s'agit de la base de maniement du fusil ainsi que de la loi sud/africaine a ce sujet ...... Examen demain !! Si si !! Nous sommes egalement accueilli par tout le staff d'Ecotraining, tres sympa ! Au lit tot ce soir, demain, leve 6h00, depart a 7h30 pour le stand de tir ! Apres un cours theorique de 3 heures, c'est 1 heure d'examen ! Apres quoi exercice de tir a la carabine calibre 2.2. Relativement facile, car pas tres lourd et tres peu de recule. Le soir, reste de l'apres midi detente, ensuite diner, ensuite au dodo, demain on doit repaqueter et nous partons pour le premier camps, Selati ! Nous prenons la route panoramique, celle qui passe par God's Window, Three Rondavels, magnifique ! Arrivons a Selati a 14h00, sommes acueillis par Byron et Jen, le chef de camp et la responsable logistique. Notre chef instructeur n'est pas encore la, un guide tout droit sorti de la brousse nous accompagnera les premiers jours.
Le menu des 5 premiers jours: Cours de base sur les oiseaux, c'est a dire apprendre a reconnaitre 50 oiseaux, en visuel et au son !! Apres 5 jours ..... examen !!! Je l'ai reussi ! Ensuite, debut du cours de guide niveau 1, pour les 28 prochains jours !!! La routine journaliere:

La reserve est grande, 33000 ha, il n'est donc pas evident de voir beaucoup d'animaux, mais on a deja vu pas mal de choses !!! Comme les photos le montre ! Il me manque la photo du lion qui etait a 20 metres de la cuisine du camps et qui grondait ! on pouvait entendre sa respiration! et moi mon coeur qui battait tres tres fort !!!! hyper cool !!!
Le temps est au beau, a part 2 jours de pluie ! dont un bel orage a l'africaine !!! Les temperatures sont tres variees, cela va de 5degres le matin a 37 l'apres midi .... (souvenirs de namibie 2010 ...) suis contente d'avoir mon double sac de couchage !!

It has been 3 weeks already since the training started ! Time goes by ..... Today is our first day off, here a small recap of these last weeks !

We all gathered (the 16 of us taking the course) in Nelspruit, and thought we will enjoy the first 2 days doing not a lot of things ...... well, it didn't go like this ! As soon as we took our rooms, the first administration papers needed to be filled, then we received a booklet about riffle handling ... to study for tomorrow morning's test !!!! The riffle handling and the south african laws accompanying it !! Wow !! We had an early night ! On the next morning, woke up at 6am, at 7h30 we drove off to the shooting range ! After 3 hours of lecture, 1 hour test, then some practise with a 2.2 mm rifle, quite easy as very light and almost no backeffect. The rest of the afternoon was "off", nice evening meal, and let's go to bed, tomorrow we have to pack again and will go to our first camp, in Selati ! We drove on the panoramic road, God's Window, Three Rondavels ... so nice ! We got in Selati around 15h00, Byron and Jen, the camp's chef and logistic chef. We got a first overview of the next days... we start with a 5 days basic birding course ... learning 50 birds, by identification and by their calls, after 5 days, exams ... I did it !  Then we started with the 28 days level 1 field guide training ! here is our daily programm:

The reserve is quite big, 33000 ha, so it's not easy to see a lot of animals, but we were lucky to get a few very good sightings !  as you can see in the pictures !!
I'm missing a picture of the male lion calling from behind the kitchen, around 20 m ! the sun had already disapeard, and we could hear his breath ! and my heart beating as well !!! Amazing !!!

We had so for nice weather, apart from 2 days of rain, we had one real african thunderstorm ! wow !! the tents are ok ! no leaks ! Otherwise we have temperature from around 5 degrees in the morning up to 37 degrees in the afternoon !!  (memories of Namibia 2010 .....) I'm so glad I have my two sleeping bags !!!
