14-16 Decembre 2008 / Botswana Nxai Pan

Voici enfin le dernier épisode de ce break sud-africain !
Le Botswana ! Pour cette dernière aventure, Sabine et Thomas m'on rejoint, voici le récit détaillé de ces 17 jours :
14.12.08: nous quittons Johannesburg, Sabine, Sam (notre guide) et moi, en L... R...., Def..... (ne pas faire de pub pour le 4x4!) direction Waterberg où nous ferons notre première halte. Première pluie du soir, c'est spaghettis bolo au lieu de grillade ! (il faudra s'y habituer ! à la pluie, pas aux spaghettis bolos !!) Ce soir nous dormons dans un bungalow, on garde la première nuit sur le toit pour demain (mais on a déja eu un cours théorique sur l'ouverture des tentes !). En chemin nous resserrons, respectivement serrons les boulons de la roue avant gauche, qui ne tenait qu'à un desdits boulons ! Je vous passerai la théorie selon laquelle il faut vérifier son véhicule soi-même ......
15.12.08 Nous traversons la frontière du Botswana à Martin's Drift et changeons nos premiers Pulas ! (Pula = pluie en Setswana) Via Palapye, nous faisons halte près de Serowe dans une réserve de rhinocéros (Khama Rhino Sanctuary). Il y a du rhino ! Et beaucoup de pluie la nuit !
16.12.08 Il pleut toujours, les matelas sont légèrement humides ... nous replions la tente .... et partons direction Nxai Pan. La majorité du chemin est humide, mais enfin la température remonte et le soleil monte presque son nez lorsque nous entrons dans le parc du Makgadikgadi, qui jouxte le parc de Nxai Pan. L'endroit est plutot beau ! Nous y restons 2 nuits.

Botswana ! Pour this last adventure, Sabine and Thomas joined me, here the details of these 17 days:
14.12.08: we leave Johannesburg, Sabine, Sam (our guide) and myself, with out L... R...., Def..... (no publicity allowed for our 4x4 !) direction the Waterbergs where we will have our first stop over. First evening rain, spaghettis instead of braai! (we will have to get use to it ! to the rain, not to the spaghettis !!) Tonight we are sleeping in a Bungalow, not yet in the tents, but still had a short theory session about the putting up of the tents. On our way we had to do some wheel bolts tighting, as the front left wheel was only staying at it's place for one tight bolt ! I won't mention the theory according to which you have to check your vehicle before driving .......
15.12.08 We are crossing the border to Botswana at Martin's Drift post and change Rands in Pula ! (Pula = rain in Setswana) We are reaching the Khama Rhino Sanctuary parc not far away from Serowe. There are quite a few rhinos ! And lot's of rain at night !
16.12.08 It's still raining ! The mattress is slightly humid .... folding back the tent .... let's go direction Nxai Pans. The humidity is following us for most of the way, at last the temperature rises and the sun is almost there when we are entering the Makgadikgadi parc, next to the Nxai Pan's. This is quite a nice area ! We are staying 2 nights.

8-12 Decembre 2008 / Kruger National Park

Décidement, le parc Kruger est un incontournable, surtout si on aime voir des animaux !!!!
Eléphants, Rhinocéros, Zebres, Impalas, Buffles, Waterbuck, Kudu, Leopards, Aigle Martial, Aigle pêcheur africain etc .... il ne nous manquait plus que les lions ! On leur a tourné autour pendant 4 jours !! C'est pas grave, se sera pour la prochaine fois ! Il y avait même de droles d'animaux !

Well, the Kruger National Park is really the place to go, especially if you like to see wild animals !!!
Elephants, Rhinos, Zebras, Impalas, Buffallos, Waterbucks, Kudu, Leopards (excellent spotting Tan !), Martial Eagle (juvenile !!), African fish eagle etc..... we were only missing the lions ! We turned around them for 4 days, well we kept them for the next time ! There were even very odd animals .... snuggle pops !!!

26.11-4.12. 2008 / Twyfelfontein - Namib - Sossuvlei

Il n'y a pas grand chose à dire sur la Namibie, à part qu'il faut y aller pour y croire ! On se sent souvent seul au monde, au milieu de paysages spectaculaires, il semblerait qu'il n'y ait rien, mais il ne faut pas s'y fier, même dans le désert il y a de la vie ! On s'attend à voir surgir le Petit Prince à tout moment !
A part ça, pour la petite histoire, ai crevé sur la Skeleton Coast et me suis ensablée à Sossuvlei !

There is not much to say about Namibia, except that you have to go there to believe it ! You may feel alone in the world, in the middle of indescrible landscape, it seems that there is nothing around, but even in the desert there is life ! At any time the Little Prince from St-Exupery may emerge !
For the records, I had a flat tyre on the Skeleton Coast and get stuck in the sand in Sossuvlei ! Adventure, adventure !

21-25 Novembre 2008 / Etosha National Park

Simplememt génial !
Les 4 premiers jours à Etosha étaient super, vu pas mal d'animaux, des paysages tellement ...... plats !
Simply amazing !
The first 4 days in Etosha were great, good sightings, landscape amazingly ..... flats !

18 Novembre 2011 / Field Guide !

De retour a Johannesburg depuis hier, plusieurs d'entre nous seraient bien restés plus longtemps à Karongwe! D'un autre côté nous avons besoin de vacances apres ces quatres semaines génialement épuisantes ! Surtout les quelques jours avant les examens ou c'était drive/walk, manger, leçcon théorique, étudier, drive/walk, manger, étudier et dodo ! Mais ca valait la peine ! J'ai réussi les examens !!!!!!!!!
Nous avons vu moins de grosses bebêtes, mais plus de petites, style (Baboon spider, scorpions, grenouilles etc....) et des oiseaux ! Les Woodlands Kingfisher sont de retour (si cela interesse quelqu'un !) Nous avons tout de même vu des choses plus grosses, et cela à pieds ! Nous avons traquer des rhinocéros et les avons effectivement trouvé ! C'etait dingue ! Et aussi des éléphants ! Ca c'est plutôt impressionnant, surtout qu'ils n'aiment pas tellement les humains a pieds !!! Nous avons essuyé quelques petites pluies ... la rivière à côté du camps n'avait pas vu une goutte d'eau depuis 4 ans, le lit faisait office de court de volley-ball ! Et bien en une nuit la rivière était de nouveau là et avec quelque 2 mètres d'eau !!!!
Hier soir on s'est fait un bon petit bout de viande avec Serge, je squatte chez lui (ou plutot mes affaires) depuis le 30 septembre et c'est seulement hier que l'on s'est enfin vu !
Maintenant je planifie la prochaine étape, la Namibie !! Etosha, Naukluft, Skeleton ..........

Back in Johannesburg since yesterday, few of us would have stayed for longer in Karongwe, but we need a holiday now ! These 4 weeks were great and exhausting ! Especially when we get closer to the exams ! The daily programm was, drive or walk, eat, lesson, study, walk or drive, eat, study and finally sleep, but it was so worth it !! I passed the exams !!!!!!!!
We saw less big games, but more small things like baboon spiders, scorpions, frogs and toads etc .. and a lot of birds ! For those who are interested, the Woodland Kingfisher are back ! We still had a few interesting encounters on foot ! We tracked once a few rhinos and after two hours trackings found them ! wouaowww! and the same with elefants, that is even more woaowww when you know that they don't really like humans on foot !!!! We also had a little bit of rain ..... the river by the camps was dry since 4 years, it was a volley-ball court ! Within one night, gone the volley ball, we had around 2 meters of water ......
Yesterday evening we went out, Serge and I to eat some nice piece of meet .... mmmmmh, it was the first time I saw him since I squat at his place !
Now I'm planning the next steps, Namibia !! Etosha, Naukluft, Skeleton ..........

4 Novembre 2011 / Ecotraining

4.11.08: Cela fait deux semaines que le camps a commencé. Levé 5h du mat, au lit a 20h30 ! Températures: hier c'était 36 degrés à l'hombre, avant que l'orage éclate ! Du coup ce matin il faisait plutôt frais ! Mais c'est pas des choses qui font peur à un ranger ! Surtout après ce que l'on a vu ces deux premières semaines ! Nous avons été garnis ! Guéparde avec deux petits (on était à pieds, donc je n'avais pas mon appareil photo!) que l'on a suivi sur 500 mètres (ils ne courraient pas !), un léopard qui chasse un impala (et qui arrive sans problèmes à ses fins) n a rien vu passer, le léopard s'est pas stressé, mis en position idéale et a attendu jusqu'à ce que pratiquement tous les impalas du troupeau soient passé, donc les derniers étaient hyper relaxes et c'est là que tout s'est passé en 3 secondes, 2 pour couvrir les 50 mètres qui le séparait de l'impala (le pauvre n'a rien vu venir, il n'a même pas eu le temps d'esseyer de s'enfuir !) et 1 pour lui sauter dessus et le prendre par la nuque ! ensuite cela a pris plus de temps pour que l'impala meure étouffé. Impressionnant ! Et nous on était là, dans la voiture, peinards .......
Autre moment intense, une femelle rhinocéros avec son petit (voir photo) s'est fait "attaquer" par un male rhino, course poursuite, le male soulevait la femelle en mettant sa corne sous le ventre de la femelle, impressionant ! Le petit qui poussait des cris épouvantables, il ne savait pas ce qui se passait ! Et ca courre à une vitesse .....
Je vous passe les éléphants (quand on est à 10 mètres, sur le siège du trackeur .......). Tout les matins on observe d'autres empruntes d'animaux dans le camps ! une fois des hyenes, une autre fois un rhinocéros bref, c'est vivant la nuit ici !

4.11.08: The training started 2 weeks ago. Waking up at 5am, early night at 8.30 pm. Temparatures: yesterday it went up to 36 degrees in the shade before a nice storm came ! So this morning was quite chilly ! But it doen't matter to Rangers! After these two first weeks, we are afraid of nothing anymore ! We were so lucky with the sightings ! A femal cheetah with two cubs (we were on foot, we walked along with them on around 500 metres, well as they were not running it was quite easy!), a leopard killing an impala (very easily) it went extremely fast, the leopard was not stressed, put himself in the best position, waiting for the last impala of the herd to come by, as all went through before it didn't stress as there were no danger ..... and then, it took 3 seconds to the all action, 2 for the leopard to cover the 50 metres to the impala who didn't even try to flee as it had no time for that. 1 second for the leopard to jump on the impala, catch him at the throat, it was almost over, because then it took quite a while for the impala to die. Were were there, in the car, amazed !
Another intense moment was this female rhinoceros and her baby, a male came and attacked her, trying to make her fall by taking her with her horn beneath her belly and lift her, the baby was totally chocked, screamed the all time... and they can run very fast !
I wont tell you too much about the elephants (when sitting on the tracker seat, 10 metres away ......). Every morning we can observe new spoors of animals in the camp, once hyenas, another time rhino, well it's quite a joal here at night !
