28-31 Decembre 2008 / Botswana - Kasane to Tulli to Joburg

28.12.2008 Le nord du Botswana c'est finnit ! Nous commençons notre descente sur Johannesbourg en 3 jours, premier arrêt vers Francistown (l'arrêt théorique à Nata a été annulé, toute la réserve a brulée !), joli camping, jolie pluie .... on commence vraiement à être habitué !
29.12.2008  Nous allons voir de l'animal aujourd'hui ! Dans la réserve de Tulli Block, nous campons à la Tulli Safari Lodge. Rudi est notre guide pour le drive du soir ! Il nous fait une démonstration de 4x4 ! Speedy est tout blanc !

28.12.2008 Goodbye the northern Botswana, it's over now ! We will go back in three days to Johannesburg, first stop near Francistown (we should have stopped in Nata, but the all reserve burned down a few months ago !), nice camping, nice rain ... we are getting used to it now !
29.12.2008 We will get to see some game again today ! In the Tulli Block reserve, we are camping at the Tulli Safari Lodge. Rudi is our guide for tonight's drive ! He gave us a demonstration of 4x4 driving ! Speedy was pale !

30.12.2008 Nous traversons une rivière pour rejoindre un des poste frontières de l'Afrique du Sud, au sud de la réserve, mais nous n'arriverons jamais jusqu'à la rive d'en face ! Nous restons planté dans le sable ! S'en suit les péripéties d'usage pour sortir la voiture de là, il faudra 2 land rover, 10 personnes, 1 treuil à main et surtout beaucoup de solidarité et de bonne humeur ! C'est ça l'aventure africaine, nous voulions rester coinçer, on y est arrivé ! Heureusement que c'est notre guide qui conduisait et pas l'un de nous, car on en entendrait encore de la part de Speedy !! Le moteur a prit l'eau ! Nous avons donc besoin d'une 3ème voiture pour rentrer à Jobourg et devons passer une nuit supplémentaire à Tulli !
31.12.2008 11 heures ! C'est le temps qu'il nous a fallu pour rentrer à Johannesburg ! Un chauffeur est venu depuis Joburg nous chercher, nous et la voiture ! Et c'est donc lentement que nous sommes rentrés en 8x8 !!!!! Comment nous avons fêté le 31 ? Etant donné que nous sommes arrivé à Joburg à 23h30 .... une bouteille de rouge et un shot d'amarula ont fait l'affaire, et hop ! tout le monde au lit !

30.12.08 As we are crossing a river to reach the South African border on the southern side of the reserve, we are staying stuck in it !! We will never reach the other bench ! We will need around 10 people, 2 land rovers, a lot of ropes and chains but mainly a lot of solidarity et good mood ! That's the african adventure ! We were dreaming from the beginning of the trip of getting stuck somewhere, we made it ! Our luck was that it happened while our guide was driving and not one of us, otherwise we would still hear him mourning about it now ! Water went in the engine ... we need a third vehicle to get back to Joburg, and have to spend another night at Tulli !
31.12.2008 11 hours ! This is the time we took to get back to Johannesburg ! A driving came to fetch us and the car, so it is quite slowly that we drove back in 8x8, the driver's car towing our car ! What did we do on the 31st ? As we get back in Joburg at 23h30, we just had a bottle of red wine, an amarula shot and hop, everybody went to sleep !

23-25 Decembre 2008 / Botswana - Savuti - Chobe

23.12.2008 suite ... Nous dormons à Savuti, qui est théoriquement déja sur le domaine du parc de Chobe. Nous continuons notre route, entrons vraiement dans le parc de Chobe et nous installons au bord de la rivière du même nom, dans le camps de Ihaha.
24.12.2008 Il pleut un peu pour changer ! Lorsque nous arrivons à Ihaha, nous nous mettons à l'abri sous le porche du bloc des ablutions, sortons notre table et mangeons une morce ! C'était très romantique ! Mais la balade sous la pluie (en voiture, je vous rassure) était pas mal ! Lionne !!!
La pluie s'arrête en fin de journée, mais pour faire un feu digne de ce nom pour notre filet de boeuf .... il faudrait du bois sec !! Ce sera spaghettis bolos ! Mais tout de même avec entrée, paté de Springbok et Gnou, champagne (local) etc. Jingle bells jingle bells, jingle all the way ....
25.12.2008 Bons drives, beaucoup d'oiseaux au compteur, les mammifères habituels. Il ne pleut pas, le bois est sec il fait chaud, filet de boeuf ce soir ! Nous avons finni par manger le filet de boeuf dans le noir, avec du pap un peu plein de bêtes ...... Envahis par les insectes ! Mais le repas était délicieux ! beaucoup de protéines ! C'est aussi ça le bush !

24.12.2008 It's raining for a change ! As we are arriving at Ihaha, we are installing ourselves under the roof of the ablutions, take the table out and have some food ! Very romantic ! But the afternoon drive under the rain was not bad ! Lioness !
The rain stops eventually but the wood is not dry, so we will not have our beef filet tonight ! Spaghettis Bolo ! but with a special starter, some springbok and wildebeest paté ! and champagne (local one, local=south african!) Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way !
25.12.2008 Good drives, lots of birds, the usual mammals. It's not raining ! the wood is dry, the temperature quite high, let's eat our beef filet tonight ! We ended up eating it in the dark with insect-pap, literally invaded by insects ! the meal was delicious, full of proteins ! That's also the bush !.23.12.2008 suite ... 21-23 Decembre 2008 / Botswana Maun Okavanko

21.12.2008 Nous repartons direction Maun. Grâce a une autorisation spéciale de dernière minute octroyée généreusement par Sam, j'ai l'extrême privilège de conduire ! Ah je les sent bien ces trous plein de boue !! Notre jour de chance est-il arrivé ? Toutes les conditions sont réunies, sauf l'eau ! Le truc de la condensation, ça marche aussi pas mal en afrique ! Les trous ne s'était pas rebouché (tout de même !!) mais impossible de s'embourber ! (même si une fois, c'était à deux doigts ..... caramba encore raté !) En chemin, nous remorquons un touriste sud-africain en panne d'essence (pardon, de diesel). Ensuite c'est à notre tour d'expérimenter quelques problèmes mécaniques ! Nous nous sommes donc rendu directement à Maun chez Mac le garagiste. Au début on a cru que c'était l'embrayage, ensuite ..... bref nous ne saurons jamais ! Le hi-light du jour: un vol en Cessna sur l'Okavango !!!!!!!!! DINGUE !!!!!!Nous nous installons dans un camp proche de Maun et nous installons ! Savanna au bar avant les spaghettis pesto, merci wooli !
22.12.2008 Le programme: quelques courses ! il nous faut ..... de la laitue bien sur (je ne parlerai pas du pain ! dont nous avions besoin, et oui, 5 pains en 3 jours ........ ) ensuite nous allons chercher Thomas à l'aéroport international ! Le plan était bon, mais nous n'avions pas compter sur les problèmes mécaniques récalcitrants ...... Bonjour Thomas, puis-je te présenter Mac ? Cette fois la réparation n'a même pas tenu jusqu'au camp où nous avions passer la nuit ...... nous y sommes retourné, en première ! Notre loueur de voiture nous organise un nouveau véhicule qui arrivera demain matin ! Prenons notre mal en patience, Thomas, tu connais le bar du camp ?
23.12.2008 La voiture est là à 7 heure, le chauffeur a conduit toute la nuit, il arrive de Windhoek ! Nous lui offrons tout de même un café, tandis que Speedy (le surnom de Sam, notre guide) le speede un max ! Nous partons avec le nouveau Def..... cette fois Moremi North Gate, nous voici ! Respectivement nous allons tirer jusqu'à Sevuti ! La route entre north gate et Sevuti est ..... humide !!!!! Mais Speedy ne s'y embourbe même pas !!! dommage !

21.12.2008 We are driving back to Maun. We ? No ! Thanks to a special permission given by Sam, I'm driving ! All conditions are there to get stuck in the mud, all ? unfortunately no ! Evaporation, this is the key word, the holes on the road were still there, with water, but not enough to get stuck ! (even if once I almost get that far .... the front wheels were not steering anything anymore ..... but the back wheels still did .... Caramba, missed again !) On the way we are towing a south african tourist who ran out of diesel. Then it's our turn to have some mechanical issues, so we are going straight to Mac, the mecanic ! First we thought that it was the clutch and then ...... well we will never know ! The high-light of the day ? A scenic flight in a Cessna over the Okavango Delta !!!!!!!!! AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!We are staying for tonight in a camp next to Maun, having a Savanna before the spaghettis pesto, thank you wooli !
22.12.2008 Today's programm: some shopping (we need lettuce .... and break, of course !!! 5 breads in 3 days ..) then we will fetch Thomas at the airport. The plan just didn't forseen the mechanical issues re-coming up ! Hi Thomas, nice flight ? Do you know Mac ? But this time it didn't even make it until the camp we were staying last night ! so we went back there, in 1 gear ! Our car rental organises us a new car which will only be there tomorrow morning ! Let's wait, Thomas, do you know the camp's bar ?
23.12.2008 Our new car arrived at 7 am, with a tired driver, who drove all night from Windhoek ! We are offering him a cup of coffee while Speedy (our guide's nickname) is busy stressing him ! We are leaving at 8am with the new Def...., this time we are going to make it to Moremi North Gate, respectively to Sevuti ! The road between North Gate and Sevuti is ..... wet, but Speedy didn't even manage to get stuck ..... that is no fun !

Décidément, depuis le ciel comme depuis la terre ferme cette région est extraordinaire !

18 Decembre 2008 / Botswana Moremi

18.12.2008 Nous passons par Maun, histoire de faire quelques course et entrons dans la réserve de Moremi South Gate nous allons passer les 3 prochaines nuits au camp de Xakanaxa. La route, ou plutot la piste est pleine de trous plein d'eau (et certains sont assez profonds, yesses!), mais comme on leur passe souvent à côté, ça n'est pas aujourd'hui que nous allons resté embourbée ! (il faudra prendre les choses en main pour cela !!) A Xakanaxa il y a un peu d'eau et qulques animaux !!!

18.12.2008 We are doing a stop over, or a shop-over in Maun et entering the Moremi game reserve at South gate, we will spend the 3 coming days in Xakanaxa camp. The road is full of waterhole with some of them being quite deep (yesses !!!) but as we are going around them most of the time, we will not get stuck ! (we will have to take that over, we want to get stuck in the mud once !!!!! hey ! this is our adventure !) In Xakanax there is a little bit of water and some game !!!

14-16 Decembre 2008 / Botswana Nxai Pan

Voici enfin le dernier épisode de ce break sud-africain !
Le Botswana ! Pour cette dernière aventure, Sabine et Thomas m'on rejoint, voici le récit détaillé de ces 17 jours :
14.12.08: nous quittons Johannesburg, Sabine, Sam (notre guide) et moi, en L... R...., Def..... (ne pas faire de pub pour le 4x4!) direction Waterberg où nous ferons notre première halte. Première pluie du soir, c'est spaghettis bolo au lieu de grillade ! (il faudra s'y habituer ! à la pluie, pas aux spaghettis bolos !!) Ce soir nous dormons dans un bungalow, on garde la première nuit sur le toit pour demain (mais on a déja eu un cours théorique sur l'ouverture des tentes !). En chemin nous resserrons, respectivement serrons les boulons de la roue avant gauche, qui ne tenait qu'à un desdits boulons ! Je vous passerai la théorie selon laquelle il faut vérifier son véhicule soi-même ......
15.12.08 Nous traversons la frontière du Botswana à Martin's Drift et changeons nos premiers Pulas ! (Pula = pluie en Setswana) Via Palapye, nous faisons halte près de Serowe dans une réserve de rhinocéros (Khama Rhino Sanctuary). Il y a du rhino ! Et beaucoup de pluie la nuit !
16.12.08 Il pleut toujours, les matelas sont légèrement humides ... nous replions la tente .... et partons direction Nxai Pan. La majorité du chemin est humide, mais enfin la température remonte et le soleil monte presque son nez lorsque nous entrons dans le parc du Makgadikgadi, qui jouxte le parc de Nxai Pan. L'endroit est plutot beau ! Nous y restons 2 nuits.

Botswana ! Pour this last adventure, Sabine and Thomas joined me, here the details of these 17 days:
14.12.08: we leave Johannesburg, Sabine, Sam (our guide) and myself, with out L... R...., Def..... (no publicity allowed for our 4x4 !) direction the Waterbergs where we will have our first stop over. First evening rain, spaghettis instead of braai! (we will have to get use to it ! to the rain, not to the spaghettis !!) Tonight we are sleeping in a Bungalow, not yet in the tents, but still had a short theory session about the putting up of the tents. On our way we had to do some wheel bolts tighting, as the front left wheel was only staying at it's place for one tight bolt ! I won't mention the theory according to which you have to check your vehicle before driving .......
15.12.08 We are crossing the border to Botswana at Martin's Drift post and change Rands in Pula ! (Pula = rain in Setswana) We are reaching the Khama Rhino Sanctuary parc not far away from Serowe. There are quite a few rhinos ! And lot's of rain at night !
16.12.08 It's still raining ! The mattress is slightly humid .... folding back the tent .... let's go direction Nxai Pans. The humidity is following us for most of the way, at last the temperature rises and the sun is almost there when we are entering the Makgadikgadi parc, next to the Nxai Pan's. This is quite a nice area ! We are staying 2 nights.

8-12 Decembre 2008 / Kruger National Park

Décidement, le parc Kruger est un incontournable, surtout si on aime voir des animaux !!!!
Eléphants, Rhinocéros, Zebres, Impalas, Buffles, Waterbuck, Kudu, Leopards, Aigle Martial, Aigle pêcheur africain etc .... il ne nous manquait plus que les lions ! On leur a tourné autour pendant 4 jours !! C'est pas grave, se sera pour la prochaine fois ! Il y avait même de droles d'animaux !

Well, the Kruger National Park is really the place to go, especially if you like to see wild animals !!!
Elephants, Rhinos, Zebras, Impalas, Buffallos, Waterbucks, Kudu, Leopards (excellent spotting Tan !), Martial Eagle (juvenile !!), African fish eagle etc..... we were only missing the lions ! We turned around them for 4 days, well we kept them for the next time ! There were even very odd animals .... snuggle pops !!!

26.11-4.12. 2008 / Twyfelfontein - Namib - Sossuvlei

Il n'y a pas grand chose à dire sur la Namibie, à part qu'il faut y aller pour y croire ! On se sent souvent seul au monde, au milieu de paysages spectaculaires, il semblerait qu'il n'y ait rien, mais il ne faut pas s'y fier, même dans le désert il y a de la vie ! On s'attend à voir surgir le Petit Prince à tout moment !
A part ça, pour la petite histoire, ai crevé sur la Skeleton Coast et me suis ensablée à Sossuvlei !

There is not much to say about Namibia, except that you have to go there to believe it ! You may feel alone in the world, in the middle of indescrible landscape, it seems that there is nothing around, but even in the desert there is life ! At any time the Little Prince from St-Exupery may emerge !
For the records, I had a flat tyre on the Skeleton Coast and get stuck in the sand in Sossuvlei ! Adventure, adventure !

Simplememt génial !
Les 4 premiers jours à Etosha étaient super, vu pas mal d'animaux, des paysages tellement ...... plats !
Simply amazing !

18 Novembre 2011 / Field Guide !

De retour a Johannesburg depuis hier, plusieurs d'entre nous seraient bien restés plus longtemps à Karongwe! D'un autre côté nous avons besoin de vacances apres ces quatres semaines génialement épuisantes ! Surtout les quelques jours avant les examens ou c'était drive/walk, manger, leçcon théorique, étudier, drive/walk, manger, étudier et dodo ! Mais ca valait la peine ! J'ai réussi les examens !!!!!!!!!
Nous avons vu moins de grosses bebêtes, mais plus de petites, style (Baboon spider, scorpions, grenouilles etc....) et des oiseaux ! Les Woodlands Kingfisher sont de retour (si cela interesse quelqu'un !) Nous avons tout de même vu des choses plus grosses, et cela à pieds ! Nous avons traquer des rhinocéros et les avons effectivement trouvé ! C'etait dingue ! Et aussi des éléphants ! Ca c'est plutôt impressionnant, surtout qu'ils n'aiment pas tellement les humains a pieds !!! Nous avons essuyé quelques petites pluies ... la rivière à côté du camps n'avait pas vu une goutte d'eau depuis 4 ans, le lit faisait office de court de volley-ball ! Et bien en une nuit la rivière était de nouveau là et avec quelque 2 mètres d'eau !!!!
Hier soir on s'est fait un bon petit bout de viande avec Serge, je squatte chez lui (ou plutot mes affaires) depuis le 30 septembre et c'est seulement hier que l'on s'est enfin vu !
Maintenant je planifie la prochaine étape, la Namibie !! Etosha, Naukluft, Skeleton ..........

Back in Johannesburg since yesterday, few of us would have stayed for longer in Karongwe, but we need a holiday now ! These 4 weeks were great and exhausting ! Especially when we get closer to the exams ! The daily programm was, drive or walk, eat, lesson, study, walk or drive, eat, study and finally sleep, but it was so worth it !! I passed the exams !!!!!!!!
We saw less big games, but more small things like baboon spiders, scorpions, frogs and toads etc .. and a lot of birds ! For those who are interested, the Woodland Kingfisher are back ! We still had a few interesting encounters on foot ! We tracked once a few rhinos and after two hours trackings found them ! wouaowww! and the same with elefants, that is even more woaowww when you know that they don't really like humans on foot !!!! We also had a little bit of rain ..... the river by the camps was dry since 4 years, it was a volley-ball court ! Within one night, gone the volley ball, we had around 2 meters of water ......
Yesterday evening we went out, Serge and I to eat some nice piece of meet .... mmmmmh, it was the first time I saw him since I squat at his place !
Now I'm planning the next steps, Namibia !! Etosha, Naukluft, Skeleton ..........

4 Novembre 2011 / Ecotraining

4.11.08: Cela fait deux semaines que le camps a commencé. Levé 5h du mat, au lit a 20h30 ! Températures: hier c'était 36 degrés à l'hombre, avant que l'orage éclate ! Du coup ce matin il faisait plutôt frais ! Mais c'est pas des choses qui font peur à un ranger ! Surtout après ce que l'on a vu ces deux premières semaines ! Nous avons été garnis ! Guéparde avec deux petits (on était à pieds, donc je n'avais pas mon appareil photo!) que l'on a suivi sur 500 mètres (ils ne courraient pas !), un léopard qui chasse un impala (et qui arrive sans problèmes à ses fins) n a rien vu passer, le léopard s'est pas stressé, mis en position idéale et a attendu jusqu'à ce que pratiquement tous les impalas du troupeau soient passé, donc les derniers étaient hyper relaxes et c'est là que tout s'est passé en 3 secondes, 2 pour couvrir les 50 mètres qui le séparait de l'impala (le pauvre n'a rien vu venir, il n'a même pas eu le temps d'esseyer de s'enfuir !) et 1 pour lui sauter dessus et le prendre par la nuque ! ensuite cela a pris plus de temps pour que l'impala meure étouffé. Impressionnant ! Et nous on était là, dans la voiture, peinards .......
Autre moment intense, une femelle rhinocéros avec son petit (voir photo) s'est fait "attaquer" par un male rhino, course poursuite, le male soulevait la femelle en mettant sa corne sous le ventre de la femelle, impressionant ! Le petit qui poussait des cris épouvantables, il ne savait pas ce qui se passait ! Et ca courre à une vitesse .....
Je vous passe les éléphants (quand on est à 10 mètres, sur le siège du trackeur .......). Tout les matins on observe d'autres empruntes d'animaux dans le camps ! une fois des hyenes, une autre fois un rhinocéros bref, c'est vivant la nuit ici !

4.11.08: The training started 2 weeks ago. Waking up at 5am, early night at 8.30 pm. Temparatures: yesterday it went up to 36 degrees in the shade before a nice storm came ! So this morning was quite chilly ! But it doen't matter to Rangers! After these two first weeks, we are afraid of nothing anymore ! We were so lucky with the sightings ! A femal cheetah with two cubs (we were on foot, we walked along with them on around 500 metres, well as they were not running it was quite easy!), a leopard killing an impala (very easily) it went extremely fast, the leopard was not stressed, put himself in the best position, waiting for the last impala of the herd to come by, as all went through before it didn't stress as there were no danger ..... and then, it took 3 seconds to the all action, 2 for the leopard to cover the 50 metres to the impala who didn't even try to flee as it had no time for that. 1 second for the leopard to jump on the impala, catch him at the throat, it was almost over, because then it took quite a while for the impala to die. Were were there, in the car, amazed !
Another intense moment was this female rhinoceros and her baby, a male came and attacked her, trying to make her fall by taking her with her horn beneath her belly and lift her, the baby was totally chocked, screamed the all time... and they can run very fast !
I wont tell you too much about the elephants (when sitting on the tracker seat, 10 metres away ......). Every morning we can observe new spoors of animals in the camp, once hyenas, another time rhino, well it's quite a joal here at night !

12-17.10.08 Sentir le bush ! Se réaproprier un tout petit peu de nature ! Ca vous dit ?
Dormir dans des bungalow ouverts dans un camps ouvert ! Faire des sorties ave un super guide, voir des oiseaux, des lions des .... bigs 5 ! Retour au camps, pas d'eau courante, ca marche aussi comme ca, un souper maison, un feux de camps (ici on ne regarde que Télé Bush) ... Ca peut être si simple la vie !

Sleeping in open bungalows, the camp is open as well ! Have perfect game drives with an amazing guide, see birds, lions, the big 5 ! Back at the camp, no running water, it's also working like that, home made supper, camp fire (watching Bush TV) ... Life can be really so simple ! Next update of the blog: 18.11.08 !
